Time: A Straight Knot June 24, 2008

a.k.a. Time is COOL!

Have you ever heard the saying, “déjà vu”? It’s a simple phrase. It simply states the feeling one gets when one feels that an event happened in the past. So, for example, one morning you wake up to see the moon still up. The next day, you wake up and see the exact same moon still up. Déjà vu?

After looking through old blog posts, all the good posts, (and all the embarassing ones XD), I decided to change my style of blogging.

First and foremost, no more randomness. I’ll only post what is interesting to read.

Second, the “Pie” persona of me is gonna leave the blog, so it turns to “Joshua” now. (See what I mean in the about page.)

And third, no matter how embarassing, I won’t delete my former posts. Haha. See, I wanna see how I’ve changed from before. It’s kinda like an experiment.

So my experiment would be to see the changes one person can undertake in an indefinite period of time. And which better test subject than myself?

DOWNLOAD FIREFOX 3! June 18, 2008

Okay. The title says it all.

First of all, yes, I am a Firefox fan. Ever since Mozilla released Firefox, that’s the web browser that I’ve been using. See, Firefox, when compared with IE, is superior. I mean, faster, easier interface, and yeah. Plus, it’s security-wise also very good. That’s basically it.

Plus, after three years of experimenting and stuff, Mozilla is back with Firefox 3! I mean, come on. Even Firefox 2 is better than the latest version of IE. Oh well, I guess each person has their opinion.

But if I were you, I’d go for firefox. Download it.

Oh yeah, and I’m not sure, but I heard Firefox was trying to set a world record. Dunno if it’s past it already, but DOWNLOAD FIREFOX 3 ASAP.

Here’s the link again.

UPDATE: The record is closing around 1 AM tomorrow here in the Philippines. GO GO GO!

Pisay and other matters June 16, 2008

Once again, school has started. And once again, I love writing again.

Funny, I have always looked forward to school. I mean, summer is fun and all. But I really have nothing to do, no one to see or look forward too. I actually like school. I get to see friends, get to wake up early, get to get stressed (okay… that didn’t make sense).

But I can’t deny it either, summer was okay. This time, I was in math training so after all those training, I am really exhausted. One good thing was ARML. This contest in Las Vegas, I got to stay with my teammates for 7 days, I think. Anyway, we didn’t win, but I did get to make good friends.

School comes, I’m third year, and yet I do not feel third year-ish. Probably it’s because none of us in our batch changed, we’re still the same as last year. Which is good. It’s fun that way.

Class load suddenly got lighter and we get lots of breaks and early dismissals. I actually really have time to cram stuff now, during breaks. Haha. Big things are coming up in third year too. Ramayana play, which I think would be fun for our class. (Cesium, for those who don’t know yet. :P) This Soc-Sci contest about writing a song. Winner gets to have their song on the radio, or so I’ve heard. Paskorus, of course. Etc.

Anyway, after school life is okay too. My routine would be to get home, open computer, do internet whatever, sleep. Nothing else surprising. Haha.

So this year, I have a promise to try to keep.

NO MORE CRAMMING.

Okay. I know I haven’t posted anything useful for the past decade, so recap.

Summer’s been pretty fun. Started out with this math training in Tagaytay. That was actually stressful, and I didn’t enjoy it much, but still, I was glad to see some of my classmates and friends there. After that training was over, I set my eyes on something I have been waiting for for a long time.

In case you needed further proof that the human race is doomed through stupidity, here are some actual label instructions on consumer goods.

On a Sears hairdryer: Do not use while sleeping. (damn!…and that’s the only time I have to work on my hair!)

On a bag of Fritos: ..You could be a winner! No purchase necessary. Details inside. (the shoplifter special?)

The Five Questions Most Feared By Men February 5, 2008

The 5 questions most feared by men are:
1…What are you thinking about?
2…Do you love me?
3…Do I look fat?
4…Do you think she is prettier than me?
5…What would you do if I died?

What makes these questions so difficult is that every one is guaranteed to explode into a major argument if the man answers incorrectly(i.e., tells the truth).

As a public service, each question is analyzed below, along with possible Responses.

Question # 1: What are you thinking about?

The proper answer to this, of course, is: “I’m sorry if I’ve been pensive, dear. I was just reflecting on what a warm, wonderful, thoughtful, caring, intelligent woman you are, and how lucky I am to have met you.”
This response obviously bears no resemblance to the true answer, which most likely is one of the following:
a…Baseball.
b…Football.
c…How fat you are.
d…How much prettier she is than you.
e…How I would spend the insurance money if you died.

Perhaps the best response to this question was offered by Al Bundy, who once told Peg, “If I wanted you to know what I was thinking, I would be talking to you!”

Question # 2: Do you love me?

The proper response is: “YES!” or, if you feel a more detailed answer is in order, “Yes, dear.” Inappropriate responses include:
a…Oh Yeah, crap loads.
b…Would it make you feel better if I said yes?
c…That depends on what you mean by love.
d…Does it matter?
e…Who, me?

Question # 3: Do I look fat?

The correct answer is an emphatic: “Of course not!”
Among the incorrect answers are:
a…Compared to what?
b…I wouldn’t call you fat, but you’re not exactly thin.
c…A little extra weight looks good on you.
d…I’ve seen fatter.
e…Could you repeat the question? I was just thinking about how I would spend the insurance money if you died.

Question # 4: Do you think she’s prettier than me?

Once again, the proper response is an emphatic: “Of course not!”
Incorrect responses include:

a…Yes, but you have a better personality.
b…Not prettier, but definitely thinner.
c…Not as pretty as you when you were her age.
d…Define pretty.
e…Could you repeat the question? I was just thinking about how I would spend the insurance money if you died.

Question # 5: What would you do if I died?

A definite no-win question.(The real answer, of course, is “Buy a Corvette and a Boat”).
WARNING: No matter how you answer this, be prepared for at least an hour of follow-up questions, usually along the these lines:

WOMAN: Would you get married again?
MAN: Definitely not!
WOMAN: Why not-don’t you like being married?
MAN: Of course I do.
WOMAN: Then why wouldn’t you remarry?
MAN: Okay, I’d get married again.
WOMAN: You would? (with a hurtful look on her face)
WOMAN: Would you sleep with her in our bed?
MAN: Where else would we sleep?
WOMAN: Would you put away my pictures, and replace them with pictures of her?
MAN: That would seem like the proper thing to do.
WOMAN: And would you let her use my golf clubs?
MAN: She can’t use them; she’s left-handed
WOMAN: - - - silence - - -
MAN: Oops.

Edward-itis January 23, 2008

First, check this out. XD Joe’s post on edward-itis. And check Alvin’s list of victims here. By the way, I’m not infected. :P Oh, and this is purely fictional. Do not take this seriously in any way. :P

Edward-itis, according to my research colleague Joe, has proven to be a dangerously lethal disease. Although originally suggested to be caused by a virus, recent studies has confirmed that the pathogen Edwardus cullenus is the real cause of this particular disease. If one puts statistics into view, an exponentially increasing graph is shown, with x being time and y being the individuals infected.

The supposed pathogen (Edwardus cullenus) is spread around the globe through a number of vectors. But maybe it is better to see the effects of this disease.

“Oh. My. Gosh. I looooooveee this book! I feel like I’m going to melt!” she said again for the nth time.
“Yeah. Yeah.” I replied. Are girls this stupid?

The vector, more popularly known by its common name, Twilight, is currently being sold in millions of bookstores around the world.

Men, beware. If females get ahold of this book, better start looking for an illiterate woman. Once the unfortunate girl reads the first word, she is then infected with the disease and is captivated by the mushy words.

Edward Cullen, the main protagonist of the book, has appeared in many girl’s hands. A sign that they lost their consciousness and are now living in a dream.

No hopes waking her up.

Recent studies have also shown that straight guys may turn gay after reading the book. Although an 80% chance that the guy can understand the foreign language the book is written in still exists, some turn gay. As we do not have enough results, this hypotheses will be researched.

“Hey look! Edward’s there!” I told her.
“Oh MY GOSH!” And before she turns to look, she faints looking drunk with love.

Edward’s, if I may introduce the term, “hut-ness,” is still debatable.

An anti-Edward group has formed, bent on mocking those who love Edward Cullen. Girls, watch out. Their words may hurt you.

Although purely fictional, the disease is real and the pathogen is quickly spreading.

So far… there is NO CONFIRMED CURE.

Edward, however, may be extinguished by a vamFIRE extinguisher. It is still in the experimental state.

DO NOT ACQUIRE THE VECTOR!!!

Edward sucks.

YMSAT Week has finally come again. A week with no classes, and where you celebrate the day by slacking off. Joke. XD

There are a lot of good activities here. For now, lemme talk about today.

The day started off with Himig Agham leading the Philippine National Anthem. Of course, why would I mention this? I’m in Himig. XD Anyway, the rest of the morning was spent with a long talk on the Haribon foundation about the environment and biodiversity stuff. You even get free stickers! XD

Then we had this STR Research thing where we had to look at research projects of many people. As I was a bit claustrophobic, I passed this activity off for tomorrow.

Then after that, while a lot of people went to the Junk Art competition, MTP 2 had a sort-of “reunion” wherein we proctor the 1st year’s Treasure Hunt. My station was the Rubik’s Cube station (surprising? XD) along with Jepoy and Emil (fellow cubers. XD). There were a lot of fast cubers in 1st year, whoa.

Anyway, time to prepare for the Rubik’s Cube competition tomorrow. I am serious, Joyce won the Sudoku thing, I wanna win the Rubik’s Cube thing too. XD

And here’s a treat: my group’s bio video.

We’ll leave it to you to interpret the video. :P

In case you didn’t catch it, here’s the link.

Rubik’s cube.

(wow. what a nerdy post…)

Believe it or not, the rubik’s cube has made a spectacular return.

And me? I’m just a victim of the youth craze. Now, everywhere I go (Pisay, GCF, Robinsons Galleria), you will see that tiny colored box. It’s been a long time since Pisay finally started to put that Rubik’s Cube competition back in YMSAT.

Actually, if you really think it out, Rubik’s cubing is not math. Sure there is some math there, but you don’t need to be good at math to be good at solving it.

My Record: 32.57 seconds. (lucky one. XD)
Average: 41.78 seconds.

Haha. I really do wish I win the Pisay cube competition. :P

I rediscovered some long lost blogs that I and a few friends started long ago. It makes me feel good.

Although things weren’t as “fun” as before, the blogs give me things to think about, happiness.

So to start off blogging again… uhh… I’ll think of something. XD
